Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu has expressed profound joy as the province prepares to host one of South Africa’s biggest football occasions — the MTN8 final — at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, September 13.
The clash between Stellenbosch FC and Orlando Pirates marks the second instalment of a thrilling rivalry after the Buccaneers lifted the trophy last year at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. This time, the drama shifts inland, with Mpumalanga rolling out the red carpet for fans from across the country.
Readiness to host world-class events
Ndlovu said the decision by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to stage the showpiece in Mbombela is a sign of confidence in the province’s readiness to host world-class events.
“We are absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured to be chosen as the host province for the MTN8 Soccer Final. This is not just a football match. It is an event that will showcase the scenic beauty and hospitality of Mpumalanga,” he said.
He stressed that the impact will go beyond the 90 minutes on the pitch. Hotels, guest houses, restaurants and transport operators are set to enjoy an economic windfall as thousands of supporters travel to the Lowveld.
“We urge all stakeholders to deliver a world-class service that reflects the warmth and vibrancy of our province,” Ndlovu added.
The premier also encouraged visitors to extend their stay and explore Mpumalanga’s tourist attractions. From the Panorama Route to the Kruger National Park. He said this dovetails with the province’s broader goal of climbing national tourism rankings. This is a campaign spearheaded by the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA).
Set to put province on the map
Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC Leah Mabuza echoed the premier’s excitement.
“The Wafa Wafa final will not only bring joy to football supporters but will also put our province on the map. I want to thank the PSL for choosing Mbombela Stadium. And I hope supporters will fill it to capacity,” she said.
As anticipation builds, all roads now lead to Mbombela. Stellenbosch will be determined to dethrone the champions, and Pirates will fight to keep their crown. For Premier Ndlovu, the final is more than a football match. It is a golden opportunity to showcase Mpumalanga’s charm and capability.
