Presidency responds to Public Protector’s report

The office of the Presidency at the Union Buildings in Pretoria issued a brief comment regarding the latest investigative report released by the Acting Public Protector, Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka on Friday which cleared President Cyril Ramaphosa from misconduct relating to the Phala-Phala farm saga.

Gcaleka held a media briefing on Friday afternoon to release the much-anticipated report clearing Ramaphosa of violating the executive members’ ethics code.

Spokesperson to the president Vincent Magwenya issued a statement on Saturday saying, the office has noted the report of the acting Public Protector, Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka, which absolves the President of alleged abuse of power or breaches of the Executive Ethics Code in relation to an incident of theft at his privately owned Phala Phala game farm in 2020.

“The President has always maintained that he was not party to any wrong doing or violation of his oath of office,” said Magwenya.

Gcaleka said suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane only contributed to the Phala Phala investigation by sending President Cyril Ramaphosa questions based purely on hearsay.

“No evidence could be found indicating that the president either works at Phala Phala farm or receives remuneration from Phala Phala farm,” Gcaleka said.
