Public Protector report slams R5,6m spent on FS MEC’s funeral

The Democratic Alliance in Free State applauds the Public Protector, Kholeka Gcaleka for finding irregularities in MEC Tate Makgoe’s funeral costs.

The Free State basic education MEC died in March 2023 and the opposition parties have since questioned the amount spent for the official state funeral.

The report showed that over R5,6-million was spent for the funeral of the MEC. It also found that the events company hired for organising the luxurious funeral decorations was irregularly appointed.

Roy Jankielsohn, Free State DA Caucus leader, expressed the party’s stance. He said the party will closely monitor that the recommendations were being implemented by all leaders. These include President Cyril Ramaphosa and Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae.

DA wants action taken

“The report supports the DA’s views. Our view is that the R5,661 260 spent on the funeral costs of an MEC and his protector are excessive,” said Jankielsohn.

“The report also highlights [that] the appointment of the service provider was not in accordance with specifications. [This] resulted in additional costs of R1,840 920. The amount was added by the service provider and approved by the Office of the Premier.”

He said the amount spent did not reflect a state funeral. Such amount is meant to cover the coffin and funeral undertaker. It also covers limited catering costs for family and guests, including state official guests.

According to Jankielsohn, Letsoha-Mathae should ensure that the provincial director-general undergoes disciplinary action. She must return with a report on the disciplinary action outcomes within 30 days.

The director-general is also expected to institute disciplinary action against all service providers involved.

Review of policy on state funerals

Jankielsohn also made suggestions on state funeral costs. He demanded that costs of funerals be included in the funeral policy by the President and national treasury. This to avoid a similar situation from happening.

“The Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) [should] consider the report. [It will determine] possible criminal proceedings against the individuals involved.

“The DA will continue to be an effective opposition in the Free State to ensure accountability. And ensure that residents get value for money from government expenditures. Where officials and politicians transgress the law, the DA will hold them accountable,” he said.
