The office of the chief justice (OCJ) has warned the public to stay clear of a fraudster allegedly impersonating Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
In a statement on Saturday, the office said the alleged impersonator used Justice Madlanga’s name to wring money from unsuspecting persons and attempted to obtain the personal information of some high-profile individuals.
“The impersonator is said to extort money from unsuspecting individuals, intimidate private individuals, public officials, public office bearers and entities, including organs of state, for a variety of reasons, including attempting to access personal information of certain individuals. He does all this purporting to be Justice Madlanga.
“The OCJ warns the public not to fall prey to this impersonator and is grateful to its stakeholders for bringing these illegal activities to its attention,” the statement reads.
The OCJ noted that the act of impersonating another individual is a crime, punishable by law. The office further confirmed that the matter has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
“Impersonating a Judicial Officer is a criminal offence. The matter has been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further handling,” it said.
