Rebecca Malope skips mentor Sizwe Zako tribute concert due to prior booking

Legendary music producer and composer Sizwe Zako is set to host the “Sizwe Zako: Sounds of a Legend Tribute Concert”, going down memory lane and as he goes through his extensive musical catalogue of 45 years in music.

Included in the first draft of the line-up was award-winning gospel artist and his long-term friend Rebecca Malope. However, she has since pulled out from the show due to a booking clash.

The concert will feature Dumi Mkokstad, Zodwa Cwetu, Pastor John Ngcebetshe, Pu2ma Tiso, Sipho Ngwenya, and many other surprise acts.

The concert is set to honour one of South Africa’s icons on November 28 2025 at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City.

Long history with Zako

Malope is one of the artists who have a long history of over four decades with Zako.

He was one of the first producers to recognise her talent. This was after she won the singing competition Shell Road to Fame in the 1980s.

They have worked together since the start of her career, and he was her long-term producer. In previous interviews, she noted how he shaped her sound in the early years.

The concert will also introduce the “Pure Magic New Generation: Talent Search”. This is a campaign to discover and showcase South Africa’s next great musical talent.

Pure Magic is a legendary group once led by Zako. He remains the sole surviving member of the group, which often featured Malope.

Under his company, Malope recorded and released several platinum-selling albums. These include Angingedwa and Somlandela.

Zako has also worked with the likes of late Vuyo Mokoena, Lundi Tyamara, and Deborah Fraser. He also worked with Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Sipho Makhabane, Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors, Benjamin Dube, and Vicky Vilakazi.

Clashing time schedules

Disappointed at Malope’s withdrawal from participation, Zako told Sunday World of his heartbreak.

“We tried to get her on several dates. But her times seemed to clash with the booking and rehearsals,” he said.

“It is disappointing and unfortunate. There are many others whom I have worked with and wished they could participate. But they could not make it. They include gospel group Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors and the likes of Hlengiwe Mhlaba and Sipho Makhabane. But it is well.”

Bulelani Wabana from Zako’s publicity team said it was sad indeed. “But the show must go on. It would have been lovely to hear the amazing music and some great throwbacks,” Wabana said.

“This concert is not just about looking back; it’s about moving forward. It’s about celebrating Sizwe Zako’s 45-year music legacy. While also creating opportunities for new talent.

“Many of his platinum-selling hits come from Dr Malope. But we understand. The date was initially 2 November and we have moved it to 28 November. We are going bigger and better.”

Malope team clears the air

Malope’s manager and daughter Nolu Malope, confirmed with Sunday World that she had prior bookings. She said the Moya Wam singer accepted a booking before the official date was confirmed.

“Unfortunately, she will be out of the province for a private function,” she said.

“She was really looking forward to being part of the event. But dates and times clashed and she had to honour the commitment,” Nolu added.

“I’m sure a lot of people will be wondering why she is not attending or participating when they have such a rich history in the music business industry together, dating back to so many years,” Nolu added.

“But maybe we can arrange to do something later.”

Beyond his impressive body of work, Zako has continued to dedicate his life to nurturing the next generation of talented musicians through his Jen Jen Academy in New Brighton, in Gqeberha, where he mentors young artists.
