The unexpected death of Tsotsi star Presley Chweneyagae on Tuesday at the age of 40 has left the South African entertainment industry in mourning.
According to family spokesperson Mzwakhe Sigudla, the award-winning actor passed away at his Pretoria home following breathing difficulties.
Speaking to reporters outside Chweneyagae’s home on Wednesday, Sigudla shed light on the circumstances surrounding the adored actor’s passing.
“We want to put the record straight that it was a natural death as far as we are concerned. He [Chweneyagae] had a complication in relation to breathing,” explained Sigudla.
“He was attended to after paramedics were called to the residence. We are grateful for the paramedics’ professionalism.”
Flood of condolences
After the paramedics’ attempts to save Chweneyagae failed, his family, friends, and fans were devastated by the loss of a towering figure.
Following Chweneyagae’s passing, Mzansi has seen a flood of condolences on social media from both his colleagues and fans.
Among those deeply affected is his Tsotsi co-star Terry Pheto, whose emotional response underscored the profound bond they forged while portraying a young couple in the gritty, internationally acclaimed drama.
Pheto, according to those close to her, is heartbroken after considering their shared experience in a movie that introduced South African storytelling to a worldwide audience.
Chweneyagae, who was born in Mafikeng, became well-known for his unvarnished and impactful portrayal of Tsotsi, a young criminal attempting to find atonement.
His legacy was cemented by his captivating performance in the 2005 Oscar-winning film.
Memorial services
Although the movie’s Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award in 2006 was a turning point in Chweneyagae’s career, his talent went far beyond that.
He gained recognition as one of Mzansi’s best actors thanks to his parts in TV shows like Jozi-H and Zero Tolerance, which demonstrated his versatility.
He made a lasting impact on the industry by bringing nuanced characters to life.
As the country struggles with this loss, supporters have celebrated Chweneyagae’s contributions on social media platforms like X, with many urging that his work be recognised after his death.
While the family has requested privacy during this difficult time, memorial services have been scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday in Pretoria and Mahikeng in the North West.
Despite the passing of a cultural titan, Chweneyagae’s legacy will endure thanks to his remarkable performances.
