Johannesburg- Samkelo Makhoba has bagged a leading role on 1Magic’s new medical drama series.
Samkelo ‘Samke’ Makhoba has been in the industry for quite some time.
She has starred in Generations the Legacy, SABC’s 1 Rented Family as well as a bigger role on MTV Shuga.
Before studying Film and Drama, Makhoba studied Medical Bio-Sciences at the University of The Western Cape.
“I realised that I had no passion for what I was doing, it became a fact that I would have most likely killed somebody by giving out an incorrect diagnosis. I dropped out and became the black sheep of my family,” she said.

“Speaking about this dream at home was always dismissed because of the many misconceptions and unfortunate truths around our industry. My parents tried to protect me from what they read of actors in newspapers, but my passion drove me to where I am today.”
“In 2015 (while studying at Wits) I landed my first guest role on Generations:The Legacy as Siyasanga. The next year I got onto MTV Shuga and the rest was history. A rather complicated and difficult history.”
Like most artists, Makhoba disappeared when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country.
“I was financially struggling and had no choice but to move back to KZN, (from JHB). I spent over a year at home putting my film qualifications to good use. My personal projects kept me financially stable. The details of these projects will be disclosed when the time is right.”
“Playing a leading role has been overwhelming. To carry an entire, new, and original series for 1Magic is an honor. I was surrounded by legendary thespians who were so down to earth and treated me with such dignity and kindness.”

“They did not just extend these gestures to me but to the rest of the fresh faces of ‘Wounds’, who include Katlego Lebogang, Basetsana Motloung, Rea Segoati, and Daniel Mpilo Richards,” she added.
Makhoba spoke on behalf of everybody and said that the production company, Penguin Films not only chose an exceptional crew but, along with 1Magic chose an excellent cast.
Makhoba plays the role of Busisiwe Masondo who is a very kind is, caring, and considerate intern nurse.
“She is starting a new slate in her life but is quickly hindered by her past. This becomes a threat to not only her personal life but puts her job at high risk.”
“The other characters also face their own ‘wounds’ where the stories beautifully and poetically develop and tie in together.”
The audience can expect to watch a young lady who is the definition of a hustler, she has a great sense of power yet falls into vulnerable and protective spaces when her loved ones are in jeopardy.
According to Makhoba, Masosndo is an extremely brave and intellectual woman who knows what she wants. She will make you cry; she will shock you; she will make you question your ethics and morality, but most of all, based on her own past, she will educate and guide you.
Makhoba stated that she believes that there is always something that an actor would draw from to execute and relate to their characters.
“As Samke I relate to her vulnerability, yet one must not confuse her vulnerability for weakness or ignorance.”
She possesses a tremendous number of strengths, especially regarding issues in line with her family and close friends. She goes an extra mile for her loved ones, and I would like to believe I do too.
Makhoba said that she has also experienced the bitterness of the industry.
“As an actress, I have unfortunately experienced exploitation repetitively. Being underpaid and overworked has taught me to (softly) stand up for myself without being labeled a drama queen.”
“I have experienced the worst type of patriarchy as a new filmmaker and was encouraged to officially be my own boss.”
“This type of genre is very new to the entire cast, so we were all learning. This new experience for us all calmed my nerves.”
“I would really love and appreciate audiences to engage in pivotal discourses in this series. I can only hope that audiences relate and develop along with the characters and are inspired and encouraged by them.”
Makhoba added that she has an amazing agent who keeps her on her toes with auditions. The Generations star mentioned that there are other shows which are not yet announced which she is working on.
