Search ongoing for minibus carrying pupils swept away by Eastern Cape floods

The Eastern Cape provincial government says the search is still ongoing regarding the minibus carrying school pupils that was swept away on Tuesday morning.

Eastern Cape provincial government spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie said: “The search is still ongoing regarding a minibus carrying school children that was swept away earlier this morning.”

Meanwhile, Rantjie said seven people were confirmed dead as a result of the flooding that has severely affected several communities in the Eastern Cape.

Seven people dead in floods

Rantjie said a police report confirmed that six bodies were found along Decoligny Village in Mthatha. The seventh body was recovered at Tsolo near Bedlana River.

Earlier on Tuesday, South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) national spokesperson Mmatshikhidi Rebecca Phala said the organisation was informed of a tragic incident that occurred earlier on Tuesday involving a 22-seater scholar transport bus affiliated with one of their members.

Phala said the vehicle was en route to Jumba Senior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape. It was swept away by rising water levels at the Efata Bridge.

“According to preliminary reports, the driver had contacted the vehicle owner earlier in the morning to request assistance. He has noticed that the vehicle was stuck. Unfortunately, by the time help arrived, the water had engulfed the bridge.

Three pupils rescued, minibus still missing

“At this stage, the exact number of pupils on board cannot be confirmed. This as it is currently examination season and pupils attend school according to varying timetables. Eyewitnesses on the scene reported seeing at least three pupils clinging on trees and calling for help. The three have since been rescued. Emergency personnel are on site, to manage the situation and carry out rescues where possible,” said Phala.

Phala said Santaco is deeply concerned about this incident and expresses its hopes for a safe and speedy resolution.

“We commend the efforts of the emergency service. And we urge the public to allow them the space and support they need to carry out their work effectively,” said Phala.
