Legendary actor Sello Maake kaNcube escaped arrest by the skin of his teeth on Friday after his wife opened against him a raft of cases, including allegedly exposing her to an infectious disease.
Mbewe had laid cases against the thespian at the Roodepoort Police Station on Saturday last week but they were transferred to Orlando Police Station.
Police summoned Maake ka Ncube to the copshop on Friday.
Mbewe, who was also accompanied by her lawyer, also arrived at the police station to provide the police with more information.
However, the actor, when faced with the prospect of arrest, opened countercharges of assault against Mbewe.
This resulted in both of them withdrawing the charges against each other to avoid spending the weekend in police holding cells.
In the charges that Mbewe had initially laid against Maake kaNcube, she accused the popular thespian of exposing her to a transmittable disease.
In a police statement, which Sunday World has seen, Mbewe stated that Maake kaNcube had not been fully transparent about issues of his health.
Mbewe also stated that the former Generations actor was a “violent man” who had “anger issues”.
“I request further police investigation on this matter,” she wrote. In the same statement, Mbewe also stated that Maake kaNcube assaulted and choked her on several occasions during a series of lovers’ tiffs.
She said he assaulted her at their marital home in Dube, Soweto, after an argument on March 29, 2024.
“While we were at his house, we had an argument, and he got angry and started slapping me. After that, he strangled my neck (sic). I fell down, and he dragged me on the floor,” reads the statement.
In another incident in the Eastern Cape in June, she alleged that Maake kaNcube assaulted her after his performance at a theatre.
“At about 23:00 while we were at the hotel in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, Sello was moody. I explained to him that he must not take out his anger on me. Sello was angry because the lady he was acting with pushed him. I explained to him that I don’t want to suffer because another woman pushed him,” she stated.
She alleged that when she woke up later, Maake kaNcube beat her up and choked her. “When I woke up, he grabbed me [by] my neck and threw me on the floor. I hit a hard carpet with my face. The carpet burnt my face, and the incident left me with a lifetime scar,” she alleged.
Mbewe stated that after the incident, the former Scandal actor left the hotel and returned to Joburg, leaving her there. “I came back alone the following day with an open wound on my face under the left eye.”
And the beatings never stopped, she alleged. She said in another incident last month at his Dube pad, Maake kaNcube assaulted her when they were arguing over his daughter. She stated that he became frustrated and told her to leave.
“I started packing my belongings, and he demanded car keys from me, and I refused to give them to him,” Mbewe stated.
She alleged that the former Skeem Saam actor plunged his hands into her bra, searching for the keys.
“And the way he was aggressive, my bra was torn apart. After that, he grabbed me by my neck and lifted me up. He choked me, and I pleaded with him to leave me because I was struggling to breathe. He let go of my neck and grabbed… my hands. He dragged me on the ground while I was screaming,” she alleged.
She wrote that Maake kaNcube’s niece, Neo Kotoane, pleaded with him to stop assaulting her, saying his actions were traumatising her, but he wouldn’t listen.
Mbewe also alleged that on October 29, Maake kaNcube came to her house in Roodepoort, western Johannesburg, in the morning and grabbed her and pushed her back and forth.
She alleged that her sin was that she did not wake him up. “I explained to him that I reminded him to set the alarm a day before [going to sleep]. He did not listen to me and grabbed me and pushed me back and forth. I told him to leave, and he did not leave. I felt threatened and took a plate with food and threw it against the wall, and the food spilt on his shirt,” she stated.
Mbewe opened the cases after Maake kaNcube obtained a protection order against her at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, alleging that she was physically and emotionally abusing him.
NPA South Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed the existence of the case but said it was not placed on the court roll.
Pressed for comment, Mbewe said that she withdrew the charges against the actor because of the biasness of the police and the special treatment they accorded him. Maake kaNcube refuted the allegations.
“In my opinion, she seeks to damage my name and good standing. She has previously threatened to do so and has since made good on the threats she made. Therefore, I had no choice but to seek a protection order, but now she seeks to change the narrative to portray me as the aggressor,” he said.
