Loadshedding at the Randburg magistrate’s court caused a slight delay and a postponement to the sentencing of Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch.
Lorch made a brief appearance in court on Friday and had his case moved to September 4 after his defence team requested time for pre-sentencing arguments.
In June, Lorch was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Nokuphiwa Mathithibala. The attack is said to have taken place at the player’s home in Midrand in 2020.
In the complaint, Mathithibala said Lorch strangled and beat her up while she lay on the ground after an argument.
She said Lorch became angry after she had asked where he had been after he vanished from the house for six hours when she expected him to spend time with her.
State prosecutor Michele Hart said medical evidence supports that of the complainant, noting that the accused did not have any injuries, which means he was the aggressor.
He was arrested the following day and released on R2 000 bail.
After Lorch was convicted of assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm, Pirates released a statement saying the midfielder had attended anger management therapy.
Bucs said they were content that this was the appropriate measure for their player.
