The Gauteng health department has availed five members of its emergency medical services who form part of the Gauteng Urban Search and Rescue team to KwaZulu-Natal to help with search, rescue and recovery operations following the floods that claimed about 450 lives and left thousands homeless.
The deployees are skilled in deep diving, high-angle rescue, swift water rescue, advanced life support, K9 dogs, and medical care, among others.
“We wish the entire team well and hope that the additional resources will help provide some relief to the various teams that have been part of the rescue operations since last week,” said Gauteng health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi.
The department said the team was established to respond to major emergency situations and disasters locally and internationally.
