Social worker testifies ahead of Bozwana murder trial sentencing

The high court in Pretoria will on Friday cross-examine a social worker as part of sentencing proceedings in the Wandile Bozwana murder trial.

This after the social worker, who cannot be identified, submitted an evaluation report of accused number three Vusi “Khekhe” Mathibela.

Grilling the social worker on her report, state prosecutor Jennifer Cronje asked why Mathibela requested to be moved to solitary confinement after he was found guilty?

“Considering the seriousness of the crime he committed, and with your 38 years of experience as a social worker, are you telling the court that a person who killed someone in that manner, on a busy road in broad daylight, is not a danger to society?” she asked.

The social worker said she could not decide that the accused is a danger to society.

“To label a person a danger to society has to come from somewhere because cases differ,” said the social worker.

Cronje interjected and said Mathibela, who has a history in the taxi business, applied to be moved to solitary confinement because he wanted special treatment.

Mathibela and his co-accused Sipho Hudla, Matamela Mutapa and Bonginkosi Khumalo were convicted of killing Bozwana.

Bozwana, who was a tycoon in his own right, was gunned down in a suspected hit on the Garsfontein off-ramp in Tshwane on October 2 2015.

The court is expected to hand down sentencing on Friday.

On Wednesday, Bozwana’s brother Maviki announced that their mother Alleta was murdered in an alleged robbery in her Northern Cape home.

“We received the shocking news of the robbery at our mother’s home in Kuruman, where the robber was confronted by a neighbour who helps our mother in her shebeen business,” said Maviki.
