South African film to screen at American Black Film Festival in Miami Beach, USA

A South African film, Treasure Hunt, will show at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami Beach, Florida. The festival will take place next month, from 11 to 15 June.

The cast includes Moopi Mothibeli, Muzi Mthabela, Trevor Gumbi, Zane Meas, and Samukele Mkhize.

The film was written and directed by Chim Onyebilanma, a visionary storyteller committed to crafting authentic and engaging African stories.

It was produced by Cap Studios, a production house based in the rural and historically disadvantaged community of Embo, in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, KwaZulu-Natal.

Treasure Hunt tells the story of a desperately poor ex-convict running from his past. After finding expensive jewellery in a trash bin, he decides to return it, only to discover that a gang of criminals is determined to use him to retrieve the jewellery for themselves.

Veteran actor and broadcaster Zane Meas said: “This movie is about making the right choices in life. We are truly honoured to be part of this prestigious event. The American Black Film Festival will give us a perfect opportunity to share our story with a new audience.”

Onyebilanma, who is also the founder of Cap Studios, added: “The selection of this film is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team, too many to mention. I would, however, like to highlight the contribution of Happiness Mpase, my associate producer. We are proud to be representing South Africa and our community on the global stage.”

The ABFF is one of the leading film festivals dedicated to showcasing Black filmmakers and talent. Held annually, it aims to recognise and promote black excellence in the film and television industries.

As an Academy Award-qualifying festival, ABFF also provides a platform for both emerging and established filmmakers to showcase their work to a global audience of industry executives, distributors, and enthusiasts.
