South Africans urged to donate blood and save lives

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has made a passionate plea for South Africans to donate blood during the Human Rights Day weekend.

It also encouraged regular donors to bring someone along, supported by a hashtag #EachOneToBringOne.

Thandi Mosupye, senior manager for marketing, communication and brand at SANBS, said: “We observe Human Rights Day to emphasise our commitment to equal access to healthcare services which is one of our constitutional human rights.

“Inspired by this year’s theme, #LeaveNoOneBehind, we encourage South Africans to bring someone along to their donation this Human Rights Day weekend,” she said.

SANBS’s goal is to collect 14 000 units of blood from people aged 16 to 75 years old who weigh more than 50kg.

“Access to healthcare is a basic human right. Every year, thousands of South Africans receive life-saving blood transfusions that are made possible by the selfless acts of our donors,” she said.

“[This is] a right that we all enjoy, owing to the comprehensive South African Bill of Rights preserved in our constitution.”
