Soweto parents shut down ‘high-risk’ Thubelihle High School

Angry parents have shut down Thubelilhe High School in White City, Soweto after complaining of never-ending renovations that started five years ago.

The school utilises mobile classrooms that the parents say are not in a good condition, alleging that some do not even have the windows and doors. They also complain that the school’s roofing is leaking and could collapsed, placing the lives of pupils at risk.

The parents also alleged that the school’s drainage system is not working.

Ward councillor Hamilton Chetsanga said the community’s complaints have fell on deaf ears. “We want results now, we do not want other plans but for things [renovations] done,” said Chetsanga.

Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona promised that the department would deliver “proper” mobile units before the end of the month to alleviate the pressure experienced by staff and learners.

However, Mabona encouraged the pupils to continue attending classes, saying learning needed to continue.
