Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni has fallen on hard times.
The 34-year-old, who is the brother of the much-revered defender Siyabonga “Nsimbi” Sangweni, has made a passionate plea for another opportunity to play football again, admitting he made mistakes in the past.
“To every PSL team and coach, I’d like to take the opportunity to ask for your help to get another chance. I’m still more active and I can contribute to any PSL team if given an opportunity. I made a lot of mistakes in my career, and I learned the hard way,” lamented Sangweni in a social media post.
The message, according to Sangweni, was intended for, among others, Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza, chairperson of Chippa United Siviwe Mpengesi, Mato Madlala of Golden arrows and Sandile Zungu of AmaZulu FC.
The veteran midfielder, who played for a host of PSL clubs during his illustrious career, also appealed to SuperSport United mentor Gavin Hunt for assistance.
“No one wants me to play in their teams, but I blame no one because I’m the one who messed everything up. I ask for forgiveness and the chance to play football again. Football is my life, it’s the only thing I know. Because of my mistakes, I have lost everything,” lamented Sangweni further.
Sangweni last tasted PSL action when he played for KwaZulu-Natal based outfit Maritzburg United during the 2019/20 season. The team of choice, as Maritzburg are known, are languishing in the league’s second tier. He subsequently joined eSwatini-based Mbabane Highlanders, where he did not stay for more than a month before departing unceremoniously. Ill-discipline was cited as the reason for Sangweni leaving the club without saying his goodbyes.
He joins the ranks of promising and talented footballers whose careers are cut short after being consumed by fame and fortune which the beautiful game offers.
