Serero’s return would inspire confidence at Spurs – Shabalala

Former Ajax Cape Town midfielder Nhlanhla Shabalala is excited by the idea of Thulani Serero returning to the club that paved his way to a successful career in Europe.

Serero is currently a free agent after parting ways with United Arab Emirates side Al-Jazira, where he spent four years.

Cape Town Spurs, formerly known as Ajax Cape Town, undergone a name change in 2020 after their longstanding partnership with Ajax Amsterdam crumbled.

After spending five years in the National First Division, Spurs gained promotion back to the top-flight league after winning the promotion/relegation play-offs.

Shabalala, who is currently the secretary-general at SA Football Players Union, said the return of Serero will inspire confidence at the club.

“I think if it happens that Thulani returns to the club, it will inspire confidence to the other players and will benefit the brand identity,” Shabalala told Sunday World.

“After all, giving back where you started is always encouraged to show appreciation and pay homage to the brand that helped in shaping his career.

“But we must also be mindful that this as it may happen comes with financial responsibilities that the club has to fulfil to a certain extent.

“Affordability also plays a role but also key is to discover if the vision and mission of the club resonates with his views, short and/or long-term ambitions.”

It goes without saying that tying down a player of Serero’s caliber will come at a large sum – a move that would seem unlikely for a club that recently gained promotion and does not have a lot of financial muscle.

According to reports, the 33-year-old playmaker is linked with moves to Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Pitso Mosimane’s Al Wahda, among others.

The Premier Soccer League transfer window only closes on September 22, which means Serero still has a couple of weeks to make a decision.
