Mammila provides clarity on Vilakazi’s role at Chippa United

Controversial Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila has provided clarity on the role of newly appointed former Golden Arrows co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi.

Vilakazi recently shocked the South African football fraternity with his sudden departure from Arrows when he handed his resignation letter to his then bosses.

Just days after his resignation, the 40-year-old landed a new job as a technical director at Chippa, where he would oversee all the clubs’ development structures and senior team.

It is true when they say “a leopard never changes its spots” as the chopping and changing in the Chippa United technical team recommenced after assistant coach Siyabulela Gwambi surprisingly parted ways with the club recently.

Following their dull 0-0 draw against Moroka Swallows at a relatively empty Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Wednesday evening, the outspoken Mammila, with arrogance, cleared the air and emphasised that Vilakazi is now his assistant coach and not a technical director.

“First of all, which clarity do you want to get? On the team sheet… you can’t read the team sheet? It says he [Vilakazi] is my assistant,” Mammila told Sunday World.

“The clarity is that he is assisting me, just like any other team, where there is a coach, there is an assistant.

“If you check, there is no assistant coach in my team [after Gwambi left], there is now only one assistant and it’s him [Vilakazi].”

The Chilli Boys head into the Fifa international break sitting inside the top eight and occupying position seven with 13 points in the DStv Premiership log standings.

Mammila said the international break couldn’t have come at a right time, as it will help fast-track their ambitions of challenging for the Caf Champions League spots come end of the season.

Chippa will be back in action on October 28, when they host AmaZulu in a league match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.
