After the Fifa international week wrapped up, the focus is now on the Caf club competitions for the four PSL teams who qualified.
South Africa is well-represented in the Caf club tournament with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates flying the country’s flag in the Champions League, while Sekhukhune United and SuperSport United will be Mzansi’s representatives in the Confederation Cup.
DStv Premiership champions Sundowns will get their campaign off the ground against Bumamuru FC of Burundi at the Azam Complex in Tanzania on Friday afternoon.
Still in the Champions League, Pirates will travel to Botswana for their difficult clash against Jwaneg Galaxy on Sunday.
Galaxy is coached by South African-born coach Morena Ramoreboli, who once showed Bucs stars when he was coaching Maluti FET College. The amateur side clobbered Pirates 4-1 in the Nedbank Cup in 2013. So, Pirates players, especially Thembinkosi Lorch, who was turning out for Maluti, will know what coach Ramoreboli is cooking.
Sekhukhune will host DR Congo’s Saint Eloi Lupopo at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday at 3pm. SuperSport United will join Pirates in their trip to Botswana and will line up against Gaborone United at the Botswana National Stadium on Saturday, also in the Confederation Cup.
Pirates and Sundowns will be boosted by the return of their players who made the bulk of Bafana Bafana in their two-match series against Namibia and DR Congo over the weekend.
Sundowns had a total of five players Ronwen Williams, Aubrey Modiba, Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala and Bathusi Aubaas. The Buccaneers were also well represented in the national team with the same number of players as the Brazilians.
Bucs had Innocent Maela, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Thabiso Monyane, Monnapule Saleng and Zakhele Lepasa donning the SA colours and they will be expected to play a key role in Botswana against the tricky Galaxy ensemble.
