Suspect wanted for murder of Northern Cape police officer

The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in Kathu in the Northern Cape is seeking the public’s assistance in a murder investigation. The team is trying to trace  the whereabouts of Samkele Shezi, 38. He is is allegedly linked to a murder case.

Shooting death

During June 2023, a police sergeant was brutally shot and killed by the alleged suspect. It is said that the police sergeant was trying to resolve a fight between the suspect and his friend when he was shot dead. Shezi later fled the scene after noticing that the police sergeant was unresponsive. 

The sergeant was later declared dead, and an investigation into his murder ensued.


A murder case has since been opened and a warrant of arrest has been issued against the suspect. However, police have since sought the assistance of the public in the matter, so that the suspect can be brought to book. 

The incident happened in Kathu, and police are asking community members in the area and surrounding areas to assist in locating the suspect.

It is also in the public’s interest and safety to ensure that the suspect is apprehended. This is because members of the public are not safe as long as the suspect lives among them, since he is considered a danger to the community.

The festive season is a time of the year when community members hold parties to celebrate the festive season. It is also the time when members of the public become vulnerable to incidents of violence. These are caused by excessive drinking and other high-risk activities. These factors make it even more crucial for law enforcement to ensure that violent suspects are taken off the streets.
