Suspected truck arsonists due in Ermelo magistrate’s court

 
Over the weekend, two more suspects were arrested in Mpumalanga and the other in Limpopo, taking the number to five. Four of the arrested suspects are said to be truck drivers.
 

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said more arrested are expected.

“Police are confident that they are closing in on the ring leaders behind these acts of criminality,” she said.


More than 20 trucks have been torched since last Sunday, with incidents reported on in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo.

Police Minister Bheki Cele said law enforcement knows of other suspects who may have been involved in the torching of trucks.

Meanwhile, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) said it will assist the police amid the attacks.

“The South African National Defence Force can confirm its deployment in support of the South African Police Service, namely in four provinces, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State,” SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said in a statement.
