Five suspects linked to murders at University of Fort Hare will return to court on May 10 after the Dimbaza magistrate’s court postponed the matter for further investigation.
The university’s suspended fleet officer Bongani Peter was the first to apply for bail when the men appeared in court on Thursday, and promised to not interfere with court proceedings and witnesses if he were to be set free on bail.
Peter further told the court that he could only afford to pay between R500 and R1 000 for bail.
State prosecutor advocate Nceba Ndelwa informed the court that Peter’s cellphone number was discovered in an abandoned vehicle allegedly driven by the hitmen who killed Mboneni Vesele, the bodyguard of Fort Hare vice-chancellor professor Sakhela Buhlungu.
According to the prosecutor, in the abandoned vehicle the police confiscated a hit list of 13 people including Buhlungu.
He further said the hit list had photos and price tags of the targets.
The five suspects – Bongani Peter, Sicelo Mbulawa, Wanini Khuza, Mthobisi Khanyile and Mthobisi Dlamini-Zondo have been granted time to consult with their legal representatives ahead of their next court date.
