The police in Limpopo have cast their net wide in search of a heavily armed group of suspects believed to have been involved in a cash-in-transit heist.
The daring daylight robbery took place at Senotlelo-Mokgwaneng Road in Matlelerekeng outside Sekhukhune on Monday.
According to reports, a cash-in-transit van was travelling along the road when a group of 10 suspects in a charcoal VW Jetta 5 and a double-cab bakkie launched an attack.
“The heavily armed suspects started to shoot at the cash van, forced the security officials out of the vehicle and robbed them of three firearms,” said Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
Ledwaba said the suspects then blew up the cash van using explosives before escaping with an undisclosed amount of money.
As the robbery unfolded, one of the suspects was accidentally shot by his accomplice, said Ledwaba, adding that the injured man was assisted by his friends as they fled.
“No security officers were injured. A task team has already been activated to investigate the cash-in-transit heists that are taking place [in the province] and bring the culprits to book,” he said.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe has appealed to members of the task team to be relentless when tracking down the suspects.
“The community must also assist us with valuable information to help in the speedy arrest of these criminals,” said Hadebe.
