Tebogo Thobejane’s driver opens case of attempted murder

A case of attempted murder has been opened after what appears to have been a failed hit on former Muvhango actress Tebogo Thobejane’s life.

Thobejane’s car was shot at by unknown attackers on Tuesday night leaving a friend she was travelling with fighting for her life in hospital.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said the star was travelling with her driver and the friend when they were attacked at an intersection with robots in Morningside, Johannesburg.

The case was opened by the driver who said the incident occurred at approximately 10.30pm.

“The complainant alleged that he went to pick up two people at a restaurant in Morningside on Tuesday.

“While stationary at the robots at corner Bryanston Drive and Wilton Drive, they were shot at by unknown suspects who were traveling in a VW Caddy,” he said.

Masondo added that the friend was hit by a bullet and she was rushed to a nearby hospital.

“The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage. Police have opened a case of attempted murder and are searching for the suspects,” Masondo said.

Speaking to Sunday World on Wednesday, Thobejane said she was still traumatised by what happened and had not managed to sleep.

“I am traumatised and hurt because it looks like they were aiming for me,” she said.

“These people are cowards. Why would you target women like that? We are just girls, what do these people want from me,” she said as she sobbed.

She said she could not recognise the car and the attackers or imagine who could have sent them.

The shooting occurred a few months after Thobejane told Sunday World in an exclusive interview that she had to relocate to another country for her safety following threats to her life.

In the interview, the actress said: “I can’t afford to get bodyguards… I have had to change my son’s school and rearrange my whole life.”
