Three women have opened cases against Jub-Jub

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says three woman opened cases of assault against Uyajola 99 host Molemo “Jub-Jub” Maarohanye.

The media personality and rapper is charged with five criminal charges: three counts of rape, two of attempted murder and one of assault.

The NPA adds that the charges of rape, one of them being opened by his ex-girlfriend and a famous media personality, date back to 2006 and 2009, when they were in a relationship.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said she had opened the case at Brixton Police Station in February 2022.

“One of the complainants laid a rape charge with SAPS in February 2022 against Molemo “Jub-Jub” Maarohanye, her former boyfriend. She alleged that the incidents of rape happened between 2006 and 2009 while she was in a relationship with him,” Mjonondwane said.

She added that the media personality decided to open the case after the rapper went on a popular podcast and said degrading things about her.

“After seeing her speaking out about her ordeal on social media, more women decided that it was time to come forward and tell their stories about the humiliation and abuse they suffered at the hands of the accuse,” she said.

After the complainant’s consultation with the Senior Public Prosecutor (SPP) in Johannesburg, three more women were willing to give statements about their own experiences whilst they were in a relationship with the accused.

“The SPP guided the investigations to completion and handed over the docket to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for a decision. The DPP office then instructed the SPP to issue a warrant for Molemo “Jub-Jub” Maarohanye’s arrest, resulting in his court appearance after an arrangement was made with his lawyer to hand himself over,” Mjonondwane said.

The muso handed himself over at the Brixton police station on Thursday morning. He appeared in court and was released on R10 000 bail, following an unopposed bail hearing. He will be back in court on 24 August 2023.

Molemo “Jub-Jub” Maarohanye’s show Uyajola-99 was expected to return to television screens for a new season in July on Moja Love.

Moja Love spokesperson Nonzwakazi Cekete said the channel recently learnt of the star’s arrest on Thursday.

“The information at our disposal is that “Jub Jub” handed himself over to the police earlier today and he is now out on bail. The channel will monitor the progress in this matter and will allow the law to take its course,” Cekete said.
