Two Tshwane traffic cops have been summoned to appear at the Pretoria magistrate’s court on November 11 on a charge of corruption.
This after the National Prosecuting Authority decided to prosecute them for allegedly demanding and receiving a bribe from a motorist who contravened traffic laws in the Tshwane central business district (CBD).
In a statement on Wednesday, Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said the officers, a male and female, were criminally investigated by the serious corruption investigation unit after allegations emerged that they demanded and received a R1 200 bribe from a motorist on September 22 2021.
Relating the matter, Ramovha said a motorist had allegedly parked a vehicle along Andries Street in the CBD and upon her return, she noticed a Tshwane Metro Police Department truck towing the vehicle.
“The complainant went to the pound at Madiba Street. She met with the same officers who apparently told her to bring R1 200 in cash after 17:00, when their commander would have knocked off in order to get her vehicle,” Ramovha said.
He added that the motorist swiftly alerted the Hawks about the alleged bribery demand.
The Hawks wanted to set up a sting operation to nail them but failed because the court did not authorise it on time.
“The payment was consequently made later that day and no arrests were affected as the operation was not authorised by the court on time.
“However, the investigation continued until it was finalised and the case docket was handed over to the director of public prosecutions for a decision, who took a decision to summon the pair to appear in court,” he said.
