Turn your skill into a steady income stream

TymeBank chief commercial officer Cheslyn Jacobs says more unemployed young adults are turning to practical and quick ways to earn money instead of relying on social grants.

He advised more youth to find ways to use what they know to build a stable income to escape poverty or augment employment income. “Selecting something that aligns with one’s natural strengths and existing skills isn’t just practical, it’s financially smart. It allows you to start earning faster and reduces upfront investment of time and money, which is crucial when you’re unemployed.”

Ideally, he said, you should create a job that should fit into your lifestyle, not add more stress. According to Jacobs, these are some tips to help you get started and make your side hustle work for you.

  1. Use your strengths

Think about what you’re naturally good at, whether it is fixing computers, baking or designing. Using your talents from day one helps you deliver quality work and attract paying clients faster.

  1. Tutor in what you know

If you are good at school subjects such as mathematics or English, consider tutoring. You can do it online or even in private groups on apps like WhatsApp. Sites like Teach Me 2 can also help you get started.

  1. Share content online

Take a shot at content creation. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are full of young people making money from fashion tips, funny skits, and more through ad revenue and brand deals.

  1. Try freelance design

If you have a creative side, try your hand at graphic design or selling digital art on social media. It’s a growing space.

  1. Write or manage social media

Offer writing services to small businesses or help them manage their social media accounts. These jobs have low start-up costs and can grow as you gain experience.

  1. Sell preloved fashion

Apps like Yaga make it easy to sell second-hand clothes and accessories. It’s a great way to be eco-friendly while making some extra cash.

  1. Make money from your hobbies

Turn your passion into profit. Bake and sell cakes, create meal plans, offer weekend fitness sessions, or take photos at local events.

  1. Teach or stream your talents

Musicians and gamers can teach others or live stream what they do best. You could also stream your gameplay.

  1. Go Digital with freelancing

Digital freelancing is flexible and has low start-up costs. Try writing, graphic design, virtual assistance, or consulting, all from your phone or laptop.

  1. Sell digital products

Make money selling templates, eBooks, or online courses. Sites such as Skillshare let you teach and earn from your skills.

“Creating a new income stream requires effort, but it also offers the flexibility to earn on your own terms and open doors to future career opportunities, even when traditional employment isn’t available.”
