Two Mozambican nationals were arrested at the Kosi Bay Border after being caught with 52 street lights belonging to the eThekwini municipality.
Border Management Authority (BMA) spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi said the incident happened on November 11.
Intercepted vehicle
The BMA border guards at Kosi Bay port of entry intercepted property belonging to the state, which was en route to Mozambique.
Kosi Bay is one of the ports of entry bordering South Africa and Mozambique.
Mogotsi said a grey Isuzu bakkie which was driven by a Mozambican national was searched at the port of entry.
A total of 52 street lights belonging to eThekwini municipality were found in the vehicle.
Hawks and Metro police
She said the BMA immediately activated the Hawks and Durban Metro Police.
“Two Mozambicans were arrested and charged with the possession of stolen goods, including damaging of essential infrastructure. The vehicle they were travelling in as well as the property in it were seized and handed over to Manguzi SAPS,” she said.
Mogotsi confirmed that a case of theft was opened against the suspects and the matter was handed over to the Hawks for further investigation.
She said the estimated value of the property recovered is R1.9m.
