Zwelinzima Vavi, the general secretary of the SA Federation of Trade Unions, has been discharged from a Johannesburg hospital and is recuperating at his home.
The former Cosatu boss, who has tested positive for COVID-19, was admitted to hospital on Monday for lung infection.
Vavi confirmed to Sunday World this morning that he was home.
“Yes I am home now.”He also said on a Facebook post that his seven-year-old boy, also tested positive while his wife tested negative. Both have shown no symptoms of the coronavirus.
“I was discharged from hospital! Resting at home now but still in isolation. Will test on Monday but I remain positive that victory is certain! Thank you all of you for so much love and solidarity! My wife and seven-year old boy have shown no symptoms whatsoever!”
Vavi’s comments came as the number of cases of people who have tested positive for the pandemic has risen to 1686, with 12 deaths recorded.
The trade unionist had previously told Sunday World that he had no idea where and how he became infected, and that the doctors had told him that his child would be able to fight off the virus without having to be admitted to hospital.
