Johannesburg – Veteran actor Sello Maake KaNcube received the biggest gift of his 60th birthday when he was appointed Play Your Part ambassador for Brand South Africa.
The thespian, who celebrated 40 years in the TV and film industry this year, was appointed after launching an incubation programme at Merafong Artistic Academy in Carletonville Civic Centre earlier this year.
Sanctioned by Gauteng arts, sports and culture department, the programme, titled “Creative Industry Youth Development programme”, offers physical training, dance basics and routines, music theory and basics, writing and entrepreneurship skills.
Since its inception, the programme saw over half a million candidates taking part in auditions for various disciplines.
Maake KaNcube’s partner and public relations manager Pearl Solo Mbewe of Wisdom Mobile confirmed that the former Generations actor, who now features in The Queen, has been appointed Brand SA ambassador.
She said the former Scandal actor’s ambassadorial responsibility included positively contributing towards nation-building and in achieving the organisation’s vision.
Maake KaNcube also confirmed his appointment and said he was over the moon.
“As an actor, you are a channel for all the aspects of the human condition and acting forms, a very intricate part of how I look at life and understand life, and how life presents itself to me,” said the decorated thespian.
The actor also said that he was looking forward to working with the organisation while growing his non-profit organisation, the Sello Maake KaNcube Foundation.
“My foundation’s objective is to decentralise the appreciation of arts and culture and engender social cohesion and excellence through the performing arts.
“Under the umbrella of the foundation, I started a gender-based violence [GBV] campaign called AfriMan Rising using a play I wrote in 1998 called Komeng to raise GBV awareness through dialogue.
“I travel nationally in men’s imbizos with various organisations trying to find solutions through dialogues to combat the roots of gender-based violence,” he said.
