Watch: Destruction from KZN looting results in alleged chemical spill into ocean

Johannesburg – While thousands of people are feeling the effects of the looting and violent protests in Kwa-Zulu Natal, the carnage, it seems, is now affecting the province’s sea life.

This emerged on Thursday morning after residents noticed dead sea life being washed up on the shores of Umdloti Beach and surrounding areas.

It is believed that one of the many buildings that were razed to the ground containing toxic chemicals has spilled into the ocean, affecting the wildlife.

Listen to the below voice note, doing the rounds on social media, explaining how the chemicals could have spilled into the ocean:

The EThekwini Municipality, however, in the meantime, said they are not sure what the exact cause of the washed-up sea life is.

In a statement, the municipality said, “We would like to advise the public of reported fish and crustacean kills at uMhlanga and uMdhloti Lagoons and some beaches in the vicinity. While the exact cause of this remains unknown, it is considered serious and can affect one’s health if collected and consumed.”

“As such, the public is advised to refrain from all recreational activities, including fishing or surfing, bait collection and picking up of dead species. Collecting or harvesting of any marine living resource in the area is temporarily prohibited until the cause is determined and the threat has abated. Authorities are investigating the source of the pollution and clean up companies are trying to contain the spill,” the municipality further said in their statement.

They also encouraged members of the public to report any further pollution in the waterways or sea to the Emergency number 031 361 00 00.
