Zandie denies Meyiwa was accidentally shot trying to stop a fight

Zandie Khumalo has denied allegations of a fight with her then boyfriend Longwe Twala on the night Senzo Meyiwa was killed.

In a gripping cross-examination at the Pretoria High Court on Friday, defence lawyer for accused number three, advocate Charles Mnisi, presented a different narrative.

Mnisi suggested that Meyiwa was hit by a bullet while trying to intervene in a dispute between Zandie and Twala.

He indicated that another witness will testify that Meyiwa was tragically struck by a bullet while attempting to break up a fight between the pair.

This witness, according to Mnisi, claims to have received a call from Meyiwa’s then girlfriend Kelly Khumalo explaining the incident before the call was abruptly cut.

However, Zandie maintained that there was no altercation between her and Twala on the night of October 26 2014.

She said: “I know nothing about that. Longwe and I were in a good space. Things were good between us, I know nothing about that.”

She was also asked about her ability to identify the first intruder, whom she alleged possessed the firearm that killed Meyiwa.

She expressed confidence in her ability to recognise the perpetrator if they were to cross paths again.

However, she refused to demonstrate how the suspect wore a hoodie, citing concerns about her meticulously styled hair.

Mnisi further asked about the appearance of the first intruder, to which Khumalo described the individual as having “dreads, facial contours, not tall, and wearing a hat”.

Confronted with a statement from Twala who, according to Mnisi, claimed the intruder was tall and light-skinned, Zandie said people perceive the same event differently.

Zandie told the court that she will not dispute Twala’s description of the intruder.
