Caesar Nongqunga has taken over the party leadership of the African Transformation Movement (ATM), while Vuyo Zungula has been moved to parliamentary leadership.
Zungula has been in charge of the ATM since its founding in 2018, but the national executive council (NEC) decided on Friday that he should be removed from his role.
Zungula was essentially replaced on June 6, ATM spokesperson Zama Ntshona confirmed on Monday.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to president Zungula for his remarkable service over the past seven years,” said Ntshona.
“His visionary leadership has been instrumental in registering the party, advocating for the voiceless, and firmly establishing the ATM on the political landscape of South Africa.”
Voice for economic transformation
He said the ATM grew from a small political party to a strong voice for economic transformation and support for poor and marginalised communities under Zungula’s leadership.
Zungula is expected to continue fighting for the rights of people who are thought to be forgotten while serving as party leader in parliament.
Ntshona stated that Nongqunga, the new president, will contribute years of experience and leadership in helping communities. Ntshona commended his dedication to creating a society that is more inclusive and equitable.
Ntshona explained: “Professor Nongqunga is not only a leader but also a beacon of hope for many people.
“His commitment to establishing true democracy and holistic liberation encompasses the creation of a conducive environment for physical, psychological, social, socioeconomic, and spiritual growth for citizens.”
Separating leadership roles
He also highlighted his work in communities, including building homes, supporting farming projects, funding education, and creating jobs.
In addition to degrees in business administration and civil engineering, Nongqunga is a doctor of theology and a doctor of religious education.
Additionally, he has over 30 years of experience as the chief apostle of the Twelve Apostles’ Church in Christ.
According to Ntshona, the party’s NEC decided to keep the responsibilities of parliamentary work and organisational leadership separate.
This move, he said, would make the ATM more efficient and targeted.
“With Professor Nongqunga focusing on party leadership and growth and the honourable Zungula concentrating on parliamentary leadership, we are poised for a new era of growth and effectiveness.”
