The ANC Gauteng provincial task team (PTT) has disbanded the ANC Joburg regional executive committee (REC) that was led by Mayor Dada Morero as regional chairperson.
A task team now spearheads the former liberation movement in Africa’s economic hub city.
Former ANC Joburg regional secretary Sasabona Manganye revealed the news in a letter, which we have seen, sent to branches this week.
Manganye stated that the PTT made the decision to dissolve the regional executive last week.
The decision came following the end of term for the regional executive committee on June 5.
Rallying branches for conference
Having not convened a regional conference to elect new leaders, the PTT was left with no choice but to pull the trigger.
“This memo serves to inform you that the REC term of office ended on the 5th of June, 2025,” wrote Manganye to branch secretaries/coordinators.
“The PTT, in its special meeting of June 12, 2025, took a resolution in accordance with Rule 19.9.12 of the ANC constitution to dissolve and appointed a regional task team constituted by all former REC members.
“The mandate is to continue focusing on the revolutionary task of uniting, rebuilding, renewing, and strengthening the ANC and its leagues and branch and regional levels.”
Manganye said the new regional task team was committing itself to rallying branches for the next regional conference to elect new leaders who would lead the party in the city to the 2026 local government elections.
The upcoming local government elections will be particularly difficult for the ANC, as it will contend with a formidable DA candidate, Helen Zille, running for Joburg’s mayoral post.
Rerunning against former deputy
The ANC’s next regional conference will see Morero rerun for the chairperson position against his former deputy, Loyiso Masuku.
The contest will be crucial for Morero to maintain his position as Joburg mayor until next year’s municipal elections.
For Masuku, winning the position is equally important to improve her chances of becoming the ANC mayoral candidate for the 2026 municipal polls.
In the position of regional secretary, Manganye is seeking a second term against Chris Vondo, a strong ally of Morero.
In the meantime, Maxwell Nedzamba and Bonolo Ramokhele, a chartered accountant, will compete for the position of regional treasurer of the ANC’s finances in Johannesburg.
It is not clear when the ANC in Joburg will convene for the regional conference.
