The EFF has unexpectedly rung changes in its provincial leadership in KwaZulu-Natal, dropping the axe on two of its top leaders and replacing them with new faces.
The party announced on Friday that it has fired its provincial secretary, Nkululeko Ngubane, and Chuma Wakeni, the red berets’ provincial treasurer.
The two high-ranking officials were shown the door after the EFF’s central command team meeting at a golf estate in Bela Bela, Limpopo.
Vukani Ndlovu, a council member in the eThekwini municipality, will assume Ngubane’s role, while Wakeni has been replaced with Ncedo Njenga.
The party and its MPLs (members of the provincial legislature) will continue to be led by Mongezi Thwala, the chairperson who succeeded former chair Vusi Khoza during a bruising provincial elective conference.
According to the party, the changes were made strictly in compliance with section 14 of the EFF’s constitution and are a direct outcome of resolutions taken at its 2nd central command team meeting of the 3rd National People’s Assembly in Bela Bela from May 2 to 4.
Strengthening the EFF’s revolutionary engine
“This reflects a deliberate effort to improve administrative capacity in one of the most politically complex provinces in the country,” the EFF said in a statement.
“These changes are aimed at strengthening the revolutionary engine of the organisation in KwaZulu-Natal and laying a firm foundation for the battles ahead.”
The sudden changes were not expected, especially after the provincial leadership survived the axe after it was reduced to two seats from eight in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature after the rise of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP).
The party also rang in leadership changes in the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and Limpopo, where it made wholesale changes to the provincial leadership.
The EFF leadership took a hit in August 2024 when its deputy president, Floyd Shivambu, left to join the MKP.
