Johannesburg – Tributes are pouring in for the founding president of Zambia Dr Kenneth Kaunda, who died today at the age of 97 after a short illness.
Zambia’s main opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema paid tribute to Kaunda, saying he would be missed by all Zambians and people on the continent.
“We have learned with deep sorrow, of the death of Zambia’s first President and our founding father, Dr Kenneth David Buchizya Kaunda. He passed away peacefully in Lusaka today, after a short illness,” he said in a Facebook post.
“We express our deepest condolences to the Kaunda family during their bereavement and pray for strength as they come to terms with this sad loss. Bashikulu KK will be sorely missed by all Zambians and the rest of the people on the African continent. Rest in peace gallant son of Africa,” he added.’
On Monday, after hearing the news of Kaunda’s admission, the ANC said Kaunda had played an invaluable role in the struggle for liberation in South Africa, the erstwhile frontline States and the continent at large.
The ruling party of South Africa noted Kaunda held a special place in the hearts and minds of South Africans.
