Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye’s cousin and trail-blazing singer has also accused the rapper of abuse.
The relative, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said Maarohanye allegedly assaulted her on more than three occasions between 2017 and 2018, but did not report him to the police.
She said she opened a case after Maarohanye’s ex-girlfriend, Amanda du-Pont, opened a case of rape against him and encouraged women who were allegedly abused by the artist to report him to the police.
In the police statement we have seen, the woman said in 2017 she visited Maarohanye’s studios in Bryanston, north of Joburg, to record a song with him.
She said a month later when she was with her friend, who cannot be named, she received a call from Maarohanye’s wife, Angela who told her they had a promotional gig at Club 808 on etv.
She was told to go to the now defunct Massive Metro studio, apparently where they would meet before the show.
She said as they were running late, she received a call from Maarohanye, who swore at her and accused her of trying to sabotage his career. She said after apologising to him, they proceeded to Melville for another show.
She said after their performance, a man started a conversation with her.
“Molemo came from nowhere and grabbed my arm, squeezed me so painfully and it was hurting. He slapped me in the face, and I had his fingers imprinted on my face after he slapped me,” she said.
She said Maarohanye assaulted her for a second time when they were at Electromode studios in Joburg. She said the Uyajola 9/9 presenter phoned and later asked her to come to the studio, threatening to send his “ amagumusha [thugs]” to rape her if she failed to comply with his demands.
She said when Maarohanye sang, his friends laughed at him. She said after trying to help him out, Maarohanye asked her to meet him in the booth. Before she could get there he grabbed her, choked her and threatened to kill her.
“He then strangled me and I couldn’t scream or move as he is huge, his body standing on my feet (sic). He then kissed me on my mouth and said ‘not bad’,” she said, adding that she went to the bathroom to cry.
She said Maarohanye assaulted her again when they were at Real Talk with Anele Mdoda’s show in 2017 at Steyn City before their performance.
She said Maarohanye, who arrived late, shouted at her because she had not changed into her performance regalia.
“He then instructed me to change. While I was changing in the bathroom, Molemo came in and I was half naked. He walked in and closed the door, saying my bums are like Sarah Baartman… I then asked him to leave; I need privacy (sic). He then came closer and started to slap me on my face (sic),” reads the statement.
Another incident, she said, occurred when Maarohanye fetched her in Sandton for the the 702 Unplugged with Azania show in 2018.
She said when she told him he was late for the show, Maarohanye lost it and assaulted her.
“He hit me on my face again, telling me that people don’t work with him because of me.”
She added that when she brought this to the attention of her parents, her father told her she was sleeping with Maarohanye.
