SAMAs find their way back to the Zulu kingdom

The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) have found a new home in KwaZulu-Natal after  Durban was confirmed as the new host for the next three years.

Durban has hosted the annual music event in the past but in recent years the Samas had been staged at Sun City in North West.

The nominees for the 29th installment of the Samas were revealed in an event that took place at the Gibson Kente Theatre, within the Soweto Theatre, today. The show was hosted by television personality Nomalanga Shozi.

It was attended by dignitaries such as Siboniso Duma, the MEC of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), Nhlanhla Sibisi, CEO of the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA), government officials, musicians, entertainment personalities and influencers.

Duma said the province was looking forward to hosting music lovers and tourists who will be in the province during the time of the event.

“We have no doubt that the entire tourism industry and other sectors of our economy will be stimulated. The tourism sector is a key economic driver, and events of this magnitude have a positive tourism value chain. It will increase our hotel occupancy rates, restaurants will be buzzing with patrons, and car hire services and shuttles will have a flow of clients. In essence, hosting the SAMAs will have impactful economic spin-offs for the province of KwaZulu-Natal,” said Duma.

Dichaba Phalatse, marketing manager of SABC Video Entertainment commented: “South African music plays a major role and as SABC1 we always want to make sure that local music is celebrated. The channel’s partnership with the South African Music Awards shows our commitment in supporting the legacy of local artists as they continue to produce music of all genres for South Africans to enjoy. Congratulations to all the SAMA29 nominees.”

RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi congratulated the nominees: “We are proud to present the class of SAMA29 who over a 14-month period put out some of the best tunes, collaborations and music videos in the country. We commend their artistry, resilience and tenacity that have led to them rising to the top and positioning themselves to be in line for the highest music accolade South Africa can bestow on an artist. We wish them well as we embark on the road to SAMA29 in KwaZulu-Natal.”
