Sportcaster Baba Mthethwa ties the knot again

Supersport commentator Baba Mthethwa is smiling again after marrying his sweetheart Monica in a traditional ceremony over the long weekend.

This comes a year after he underwent a life changing surgery which saw him losing his mobility after his leg was amputated due to gangrene.

For the first time since his surgery, pictures of a wheelchair bound Mthethwa surfaced online on Thursday at his traditional wedding as he was clad in matching traditional attire alongside Monica.

Shocked fans of the legendary Sesotho commentator, popular for his iconic line, hothaata banna, took to social media to express shock at the sight of the aging star.

Mthethwa was not immediately available when Sunday World contacted him for comment, however, he previously spoke about his struggle with gangrene in an interview with sportscaster Robert Marawa in November last year.

Mthethwa told Marawa that he fell sick earlier on in the year and was on a deathbed for six months.

“When the year started, I fell sick. I was on a deathbed for six solid months. Thanks to my wife I got better. She was there for me, helping me get better with the family and my children as well. They have always been there supporting me,” he said.

The popular commentator said he had to keep news of his sickness and amputation to himself and his family because he knew that he would make a full recovery.

“I had to amputate my leg halfway because I had a gangrene on my leg. That is what made me sick. The reason I had to amputate was because the gangrene was going up my leg so we had to amputate so that I could be able to live longer,” he said.

He said following his diagnosis, he thought that he was going to lose everything he worked for. The media personality added that his wife helped him make a speedy recovery.

“At one point I could not drive and she was driving for me and that is one thing I appreciate…

“My wife would always say to me that sometimes I feel alone but since you have healed, I have this thing that God give us more time for me to spend with this man,” he said.

Mthethwa and Monica met over 20 years ago through business and have remained friends throughout the years. He was previously married to businesswoman Kgomotso Olivia Koosimile. They divorced in 2019.

Mthethwa, who was off television screens and radio for most of last year, appears to be in high spirits on his social media pages as he shared that he will be commentating at the Nedbank Cup semi-finals this weekend.
