Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Kaylin Swart is optimistic that the team will successfully defend the CAF African Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) title to demonstrate to their critics that their triumph in 2022 was no mere fluke.
Swart was speaking from Morocco, where the Desiree Ellis-led squad engaged in a practice match against Benin on Saturday.
“The memories we created in Morocco are truly remarkable; we were in Rabat in 2022, and now we find ourselves in Casablanca,” Swart said.
“Yet, the sentiment remains unchanged. We are immensely excited to be here, as it feels like familiar territory, and we hope to rekindle the enthusiasm from 2022 and, with any luck, replicate that success once again.”
Hailing from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, 31-year-old Swart emphasised the significance of defending this prestigious continental title, as it would cement a lasting legacy for the players.
“We are tasked with penning a new chapter, and there is much more to accomplish. However, if we can mirror our past achievements, it would be extraordinary.
“The path ahead will be fraught with challenges, but 2024 [or 2025] could very well unfold as a remarkable chapter for us.
“It’s astonishing to consider that we are merely days away from kick-off, yet our excitement is palpable.”
Striving for favourable outcome
She continued: “We must ensure that every detail is meticulously attended to so that when we commence our first match, we are fully prepared and aware of our objectives.
“Naturally, we are striving for a favourable outcome, specifically a victory. That is our immediate focus and goal.”
In encouraging news for Ellis, striker Jermaine Seoposenwe has reported for national team duty and joined her teammates in Casablanca. She started training with the rest of the squad on Sunday.
On the other hand, Kgaelebane Mohlakoana is currently absent due to club commitments, but it is expected that she will arrive in Morocco within the next few days.
Drawn in Group C with Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania, Banyana will kick off their campaign with a match against Ghana on July 7.
