Chiefs fined R200 000 after pleading guilty for Stellenbosch chaos

The Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) disciplinary committee (DC) has slapped Kaizer Chiefs with a R100 000 fine following chaos that ensued in their MTN8 quarter-final match against Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium over a week ago.

Though it was not the Soweto giants’ home game, Amakhosi pleaded guilty as charged after their fans, who had packed the small venue to capacity, invaded the pitch when Chiefs scored and when the referee blew the final whistle.

The league’s DC prosecutor Zola Majavu said Amakhosi have been sanctioned with a R200 000 fine, half of which is suspended for two years, unless they repeat the same offence.

“I can confirm that Chiefs appeared before the league’s DC to answer to two counts of pitch invasion by their spectators, as well as one count of the delayed restarting of the match after the pitch invasion,” said Majavu.

“They pleaded guilty as charged and having listened to extensive submissions on behalf of their prosecutor and their legal representative, the PSL DC sanctioned Chiefs to a monetary fine of R200 000 of which half is suspended for a period of 24 months on condition that during the period, they are not found guilty of the same offence.

He said the league was directed to carry the costs of the sitting as opposed to Chiefs on the understanding that as the events organiser, it ought to have arranged security differently.

“Chiefs were ordered to pay the costs, if any, of the perimeter fence which was breached by its supporters. The league was ordered to pay for the costs of the outer perimeter fence which was damaged as a result of the invasion due to what was characterised as inadequate security arrangements.

“Both the league and PSL senior officials are directed by the DC to address a joint press conference at which they would be expected to convey a message regarding this type of ill-behavior.

“It was recognised that punishing the clubs alone in this instance is not enough, hence the directive from the league to shoulder some responsibility in assisting Chiefs to address the masses out there, mindful of the fact that we have emerged from Covid-19 and maybe people have forgotten how to behave in the stadium,” added Majavu.
