Motsepe Foundation Championship log leaders Durban City need only three points to realise their dream promotion to the elite league.
Despite losing their key player, Sinamandla Zondi, who collapsed during their home match against Milford before being declared dead in hospital a week ago, City has managed to regroup. They went on to win two back-to-back league matches.
First in a midweek match against Pretoria, whom they beat 3-0 away in Pretoria. This was before they could turn the heat on JDR Stars with another resounding 3-0 drubbing on May 4.
League title
The Simo Dladla-coached side are now topping the log with 52 points after 27 matches. And all they need now is to win one of their remaining three matches to cap their glorious season with the league title. Then they can smile all the way to the premier division league.
Having scored the most goals in the league by far (39 goals and conceded 19), City are at plus 20 goals. This as opposed to their closest rivals, Orbit College FC, who are on plus 12 goals.
And they are second on the log with 49 points from 28 games. Orbit assumed the second spot after they overcame the off-form Baroka FC with a 2-1 win at the Olympia Park in Rustenburg this past weekend.
Black Leopards
The biggest disappointment was Black Leopards. They missed their opportunity to strengthen their league title hopes when they lost 2-1 away to Casric FC. And they dropped to the fourth position on the log with 44 points from 28 matches.
With only possible six points to play for in their last two matches, Lidoda Duvha will have to scramble for the top three finish with Orbit College (49 points), Casric FC and Kruger United, who are on the same number of points with them.
JDR Stars, who are in the sixth position, cannot be ruled out of the race. This as they are just four points behind them with 40 points.
The league matches will continue on May 11 in what is described as the Super Saturday. All the matches will be played on the same day.
