Johannesburg – Bafana Bafana and Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Darren Keet has signed up with his home club Cape Town City in the PSL’s top-flight Premiership on a three-year deal.
The 31-year goal-minder joins his home team The Citizens as a replacement for departed keeper Peter Leeuwenburgh, who left Cape Town City at the end of the 2020/21 season for his homeland, the Netherlands.
Keet first made his deput in the professional ranks for Cape side Vasco Da Gama in 2007, he then moved to Wits the following season and stayed until 2011 before being enlisted abroad where played for Belgian side KV Kortrijk until 2016.
He rejoined Wits for his second stint and played for three seasons. He then went overseas again to join another Belgian side OH Leuven for one season.
On his return he played for PSL national first division outfit Cape Umoya United, until his latest move.
Keet said it was pleasing to revive the relationship with coach Eric Tinker, who coached him at Wits, a club that is now history after its franchise was sold before the beginning of last season.
The century-old Wits was sold to Limpopo businessman Lawrence Mulaudzi, who was the Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila chairman but due to financial reasons, he in turn sold to another tycoon Abram Sello, who recently renamed it Marumo Gallants.
“I am excited to be back, I’m looking forward to working with coach Eric Tinkler again,” said Keet, who made a total of 122 appearances for Wits across both stints.
“Looking at my future plans, Cape Town was a good place to start, and obviously the opportunity arose. I want to a part of something big, I want to part of something extra special.
“Since I was young, one of the only things I’ve wanted to achieve was to be the best goalkeeper in South Africa. I’ve won all the trophies, I’ve had the experience of winning the PSL before, I definitely want more. I’m not coming here to settle for anything less.”
