Hugo Broos to field new line-up in friendly match against Mozambique

Supporters of Bafana Bafana can anticipate a new line-up when the national team faces Mozambique in tonight’s international friendly match.

Bafana will play the Mambas in their second friendly game at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium following their goalless draw with Tanzania on Thursday.

Hugo Broos, the coach of Bafana, has since stated that he will field a new squad instead of the one that played last week.

“While maintaining consistency is crucial in these matches, which serve as part of our preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations and the Fifa World Cup qualifications, we also need to ensure that every player in the camp has ample opportunity to express themselves on the field,” said Broos after the team’s last training session in Polokwane on Monday.

“The game against Mozambique will not be an easy one, as we are playing against a formidable opponent.

“I believe they are currently performing well in the qualifiers for the 2026 Fifa World Cup. They also had a very good Afcon last year in Ivory Coast, so Mozambique is certainly not a bad team.”

He continued: “On the other side, it will be a good test for all those new and young players who are with us at the moment.”

Broos splits captaincy duties

As much as performance is crucial in this game to help him evaluate the new players, the 73-year-old coach added that “it is also important that we win so that we can improve our Fifa rankings”.

Broos has chosen to divide up the team’s captaincy duties this Fifa window by giving the armband to Fawaaz Basadien in the opening game against Tanzania, as captain Ronwen Williams is currently with his team (Mamelodi Sundowns) at the Fifa Club World Cup in the US.

In the game against Mozambique tonight, Nkosinanthi Sibisi will have the chance to captain the squad.

In response, Sibisi stated: “It’s a privilege and an honour for me to be able to lead the team, and captaining Bafana Bafana obviously ranks very high in one’s list of achievements. I want to express my gratitude to the coach for believing in me.”
