Magesi FC has embarked on a bold new move to start afresh and chief among these changes was to part ways with the head coach and a few notable players.
Their supporters can anticipate a reimagined team as the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season approaches, following the club’s commitment to structural reforms in preparation for the forthcoming campaign.
In keeping with these structural changes, the club has already severed ties with head coach Owen da Gama, and subsequently released 10 key players. They are deemed surplus to the club’s requirements for the new season.
Parting of ways made public
The club has officially announced Da Gama’s departure, who, during his six-month tenure at the helm of the beleaguered Limpopo-based outfit, successfully steered them away from relegation.
Affectionately dubbed “Rubber Doll,” the multilingual coach, renowned for his illustrious career as a striker with Dynamos and Moroka Swallows during the mid-80s and early 90s, guided Magesi to a respectable 13th place finish. In the process, he garnered individual accolades, clinching the 2025 Coach of the Month award in March. This, no doubt, proved his mettle as a coach.
During his stay at Magesi, the 63-year-old coach recorded an impressive tally of seven victories, five draws, and seven defeats across the 19 matches he managed at Dikwena tsa Metse.
Other heads on the block
Born in Volkrust, a town in Mpumalanga near the KwaZulu-Natal border, it remains to be seen which club Da Gama will join following his successful rescue mission at Magesi.
In addition to Da Gama’s exit, ten players have also been released from the club.
The departing players include Gift Motupa, Neverdie Makhubela, Deolin Mekoa, Rhulani Manzini, Amos Mokwena, Boikanyo Komane, Maboke Matlakala, Anathi Ngwadla, Given Mashikinya, and Menzi Ndwande.
The club management has since expressed their gratitude towards coach Da Gama and the departing players for their invaluable contribution. They extended their best wishes to the departed for their future success.
Magesi is one of three clubs representing Limpopo province in the Premier League. They have at their disposal three of the province’s foremost stadiums, including the two named after late ANC Youth League leader, Peter Mokaba, as well as the recently renovated Seshego Stadium. All three pitches are situated within the Polokwane Municipality.
