ASA president James Moloi promises to get more sponsors for athletes

Following his re-election as the Athletics South Africa (ASA) president, James Moloi has promised that he and his board will actively seek more sponsors for athletes.

In a two-way race last weekend, Moloi defeated former president Aleck Skhosana and was re-elected to head the national federation.

“I am grateful for the support that was shown to me by the council, which shows that we did a wonderful job in the past four years,” Moloi said.

“So, now I’m going to do my level best to uplift and to bring more events to South Africa, especially for the gold level.”

Moloi will have John Mathane as his new vice-president, while Kesa Molotsane, who served as deputy over the past four years, was elected as the new chairperson of the athletes commission.

Targets set for next four years

Jean Verster retained his position as chairperson of the track and field commission, while Jakes Jacobs was re-elected chairperson of the cross-country commission.

Moloi promised to eliminate factions within his board and to increase sponsorships for athletes in the next four-year term.

“We went to different companies before, at the time in 2022, 2023. But most of the companies told us that ‘you must be stable, and then you must give us results’.

“But now, at the present juncture, we are going to ask for money, visit all the companies, and ask the big companies to please join us because our athletes are doing very well.

“We will go out of our way and try to get more sponsors, especially for track and field, road, and everything, so that our athletes can get incentives.

“And then we are going to unite the board. The board will be very solid, and most of these guys are well-experienced,” Moloi added.
