Young batting sensation Dewald Brevis is finally set to get his chance to impress at senior international level after receiving his maiden call-up to the Proteas limited overs squad.
The calls for the explosive right-hander to be brought into the Proteas have been loud over the past few months, with Brevis setting the scene alight.
He made a name for himself at the 2019 U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, where he was the stand-out performer, smashing 506 runs to finish as the top run scorer and named Player of the Tournament.
Brevis also holds the record for the highest individual domestic T20 score in South Africa, smashing 162 off 57 balls for the Titans during last season’s CSA T20 Challenge.
He has also been part of T20 leagues around the world, playing for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, MI Cape Town in the SA20 and the MI New York in Major League Cricket in the US.
But what seems to have forced Proteas white ball coach Rob Walter’s hand to pick him was his impressive performances for South Africa A in the recent tour to Sri Lanka.
“I am just looking forward to giving him the opportunity and platform to express himself and show what he is capable of,” Water told the media. “He’s already had the experience in a number of different T20 leagues around the world, where he has rubbed shoulders with a lot of top professionals in the game. He is like a sponge, and he is excited to get to the park.
“He is one of our up-and-coming youngsters. For now, he is going to be in the middle order. We have identified him as someone who can develop his finishing skills.”
The youngster has the backing of former captain Temba Bavuma, who said: “You can understand the hype around the guy. He plays a super attractive game,” said Bavuma.
“I hope he has the mental capacity to put all the hype aside and just focus on his game.”
