Ecstacy and a media frenzy are expected when retired boxing kingpin Floyd “Money” Mayweather lands in Mzansi on Friday for a boxing extravaganza weekend in KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg.
The American motormouth will be a guest of recently coronated Zulu emperor King Misuzulu kaZwelithini in a six-bout bonanza at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday 11 December.
The inaugural event is called the King Misuzulu International Boxing Tournament. There will be 12 boxers and six titles on offer throughout the spectacle. It has been reported that the Zulu King personally invited Mayweather, whom he met when he was still studying in the United States.
One of the organisers mentioned that after the KwaZulu event, Mayweather will have a few stops in Johannesburg where he will conduct CSI projects for boxing enthusiasts in Gauteng.
Mayweather, one of the most flamboyant and well-known sports personalities of all times, had an illustrious career as a boxer and he retired with an undefeated record. He is known for showing off his money and for crass materialism, including fancy cars and designer clothing labels.
VVIP tickets to sit alongside the Majesty king and Mayweather are selling at around R25 000 each. And according to media reports, the VVIP tickets were selling like hotcakes with boxing lovers and celebrity-chasers keen to break an arm and a leg just to be in the company of the two icons.
Efforts to reach organisers Arnold “Squire” Nododile and Jacob Mnisi of J4 Joy Foods to share more insight proved unsuccessful as Nododile’s phone rang answered.
King Misuzulu will present a belt to the winner of the vacant KZN junior welterweight title fight between Ntethelelo Nkosi and Lindokuhle Dlamini. Rene Giron will face Azinga Fuzile for the vacant IBO Lightweight Intercontinental title. For the SA Junior Welterweight National title, Prince Dlomo will exchange gloves with Marcus Lebogo while Ronald Malindi will fight against Jorge Mendoza for the WBF Bantamweight World title.
Rhofiwa Nemushungwa will challenge Fillipus Shaanuka for the vacant Pan Africa Bantamweight title.
In the women’s bout, Marciella Cornejo and Mapule Ngubane will slug it out for the vacant WBO International Female Middleweight title.
