As part of the Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Africa 2023 community outreach, the NBA unveiled four newly renovated basketball courts in Alexandra township at the weekend.
The BWB Africa took place at the American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) from Friday, when 80 boys and girls returned to the courts to participate in on-court skills stations, played games, and continued to learn from current and former NBA and WNBA players and coaches.
On Saturday afternoon, Miami Heat center and two-time NBA All-Star Bam Adebayo alongside 2011 NBA champion Ian Mahinmi, visited the NBA store and engaged with fans at Sandton City Mall.
Shortly after a brief shootaround session and signing of autographs, NBA Africa unveiled four newly renovated basketball courts in Alex as part of BWB Africa the league’s efforts to make the game more accessible across the continent.
Some of the stars that graced the event was Golden State Warriors and 2022 NBA champion Kuminga, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland and Orlando Magic shooting guard Jalen Suggs.
The court unveiling was followed by a Jr. NBA clinic for 150 boys and girls from the local community, which was facilitated by the current and former NBA and WNBA coaches and players.
More basketball activities continued on Sunday morning, with Cleveland Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and 2018 Coach of the Year Dwane Casey hosting a FIBA coaches’ clinic at AISJ in the afternoon.
The camp is set to conclude with championship games and BWB Africa 2023 awards on Tuesday.
