After the humbling 3-0 series loss to Jamaica recently, the Spar Proteas could not have responded any better, as they are now one match away from clinching the Vitality
Netball Nations Cup this evening in London.
South Africa started their campaign on the front foot as they went three games unbeaten against Uganda, England, and Malawi in the Nations Cup.
Their biggest win, though, came against the world number four-ranked English side last Sunday, when they upset them on home soil with a nail-biting 61-59 win.
Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane, who was in the thick of things and instrumental in the centre of the court, said she was proud of the team for its famous win over a strong
England side but would seek to finish what they started and ultimately win the competition.
“I am happy that we were able to have pulled that game through. It was really a tough match. But we had a lot of inconsistency in the game, which we know we will have to fix going forward,” Chawane said.
“But I’m so proud of us being able to go out there and fight till the very end for us to get that win. So proud of the girls; the fighting spirit that we have and the energy within the group that’s propelling us to do well.
“England did study most of our movements, but it was also in our persistence that we were able to still get the ball and still be able to do well. I am super proud of the girls and looking forward to us ending the series on a high and finishing off what we started.”
Former Bafana Bafana and Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe has since wished the team good luck ahead of the final.
“I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Spar Proteas all the best at the Vitality Netball Nations Cup. You guys are making us proud, and keep up the good work,”
Radebe said.
The final is set to take centre stage at the Copper Box Arena at 6pm (SA time) against England.
